Vitamin D

In my web surfing journeys I happened upon the blog at http://naturalhealthbeauty.info/dry-skin-effective-treatments/. The post was about various dry skin causes and treatments. The part I chose to highlight was:

“Apart from keeping your skin clean and well moisturized, a health skin requires daily exposure to light and air. The skin plays host to a wide range of micro-organisms including bacteria and yeasts which no amount of cleaning will remove. Sunlight is one of the best ways to keep these bacterias within acceptable levels and promote healthy skin.
Sunlight also causes the body to produce vitamin D3 which is another essential element of healthy skin. So aim to get half an hour of daily sunlight on the areas that are affected by dry skin. However, make sure you use an appropriate sunblock to avoid getting burnt, and keep your skin properly hydrated by drinking plenty of water and using a moisturizer.”
There are two points I would like to highlight here. The first is the role of sunlight in keeping our skin in check as far as microorganisms and yeast is concerned. I have never thought of this or even read of it but it makes alot of sense. Sunlight is a purifier and can be a powerful germ killer due to the ultraviolet radiation.
Strawberries in milkThe second is one I am familiar and that is the role of the sun in creating Vitamin D in our bodies. We simply must have sun to create Vitamin D. It is added to our milk to try to meet the body’s demand but it is insufficient for most. Those in climates north of Atlanta often do not create enough Vitamin D naturally. Vitamin D is created in the skin when it is exposed to sufficient sunshine. It is vital to the creation and maintenance of bone tissue. All the Calcium in the world will not give you strong bones without Vitamin D.
The takeaway is that despite warnings about sun exposure, we need a certain amount to be healthy.

Like Ice Tea on a Hot Summer Afternoon

My surfing tool me this time to a product review at  http://beautyiseasy.com/2010/07/16/oh-the-scent-of-zensation-–-zensation-hydrating-moisture-cream/.  The review is for a product called Zensation Hydrating Moisture Cream. The reviewer was very positive about the cream and recommended it. The part of the review which  struck me was:

Ice cubes in a glass of iced tea. Lighting con...

“With two key ingredients being Lavender Oil and Roman Chamomile Oil, you know that the smell is going to be nice. It’s herbal, light and fresh: the scent equivalent of a cool cup of lightly sweetened ice tea (with a gentle squeeze of lemon) on a hot summer afternoon. I now look forward to my morning application of moisturizer along with my morning cup of coffee – and that is saying a lot because I really look forward to my morning cup of coffee!
Final Verdict? I’m a fan the product and, thus far, so is my skin. $85 is steep for a daily moisturizer, but a little goes a long way with this product and I do love the smell.”
I want to make two observations. First, the description of this moisturizer as a glass of iced tea on a hot summer afternoon intrigues me. Moisturizer, ideally, should be that cooling refreshing balm to the skin. I’ve always felt that way. So many of them leaving you feel like you slathered on a layer of oil on your face. To find something that is in comparison to that a delight to use is refreshing.
Secondly, there is the mention of the price of the cream. It is high but I want to underscore the point the reviewer
makes. With high end products you don’t use alot. If the product is good you don’t need to put more than a quarter size dose on your face. It goes a long way.

Does Dewy mean Greasy?

schematic of human skin

Image via Wikipedia

In my perusal of all things moisturizer, I came across the post at http://truthinaging.com/face/kaplanmd-day-cream-spf-15-and-replenishing-night-cream-reader-reviewed . In her review of Kaplan night cream, i found this gem:

“The Replenishing Night Cream is clearly a richer lotion and I credit it with rescuing my dried out winter skin. These days, however, as the oil glands go into overdrive for the summer, I think I might back off from its use. One night as I was preparing for bed, my wonderful husband who never provides an honest opinion on my appearance because he always tells me I look beautiful to him (horrible guy, huh?) came in just after I had applied the night cream. I explained that I was having such a difficult time reviewing some new products and asked if he thought my skin had that “dewy” look to which he replied, “Uh well if dewy means greasy, then yes.”

This made me laugh. The sudden honesty of the husband was refreshing if not helpful. But it does underscore the importance of choosing oily skin specific products if that is a problem you have. You don’t want to exacerbate already oily skin even if the ingredients are good for the skin in general. There are plenty of oily skin centered products on the market. It is even doubly more important if you struggle with acne issues. Too many of the general products will clog the inflamed pores and made a bad situation worse.

Oil and water don’t mix. Everyone knows that. But some folks apparently confuse oil for water, on their skin that is. In reading on the web at http://www.theozarkschronicle.com/skin-care/facial-moisturizers-and-oily-skin.html , I found this discussion:

Facial moisturizers are significant as the skin ages, but many people are reluctant to exercise them if they have oily skin. The predicament is not with using a moisturizing facial cream, but with using the deplorable ones. Using the apt moisturizer can help oily skin objective as great as any other skin type.

Any skin type can suffer from a lack of hydration. However, this lack may not have anything to do with the amount of oil in the skin. The amount of water in the skin may be gross, leading to sensitive skin or skin that is flaky as well as oily. There are a number of facial moisturizers that can assist restore the suitable balance of moisture without making it oiler or causing blemishes.

Oil has more to do with the surface of your skin, water or moisture inhabit the cells below the surface. Oil is great

for preventing skin from drying out but it cannot plump out the cell and facilitate the cellular respiration that water can. If you have oily skin you cannot afford to use just any moisturizer but you must use a moisturizer. Just find one which will not add to your oily problem. There are lots of good ones out there. Look for “oil-free” or “for oily skin” in the description.
